16th -22nd May marks Action for Brain Injury Awareness Week. Here at Peter Bowles and Company, we support the need to raise awareness for those suffering with the devastating effects of brain injuries.

Having a brain injury can be an extremely stressful, daunting and often life changing experience. When someone is diagnosed with a brain injury, it can have a devastating impact, not only upon that individual but upon the entire family.

BIRTH RELATED BRAIN INJURY

The most common cause of infant brain injury is lack of oxygen to the baby’s brain, either before or during birth. Cerebral Palsy is one such form of brain injury. Symptoms can include difficulty in movement of the limbs, difficulty swallowing, epilepsy, breathing difficulties, incontinence, not being able to speak and learning difficulties.

It is extremely important that children affected by brain injuries access specialist therapy and equipment to ensure that they reach their potential and do not deteriorate. Other considerations include financial support for the family in terms of the costs of care and any necessary equipment and adaptations to the home.

ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURIES (ABI)

An ABI is a brain injury caused by events after birth. These can be caused as a result of trauma to the head such as RTC’s, assaults, falls or sporting injuries. An ABI can also arise from certain medical conditions such as tumours, strokes, meningitis, brain aneurysm and haemorrhage.

The effects can be wide ranging and can depend on a number of factors including the location and severity of the injury. Symptoms can include increased tiredness, headaches and sensory changes as well as changes in cognitive ability.

It is absolutely vital that those suffering from brain injuries get the necessary support and assistance. This includes prompt access to the best rehabilitation and specialist care to help sufferers regain their dignity and rebuild their lives.

If you or a loved one has suffered a brain injury and believe that someone else is at fault, you may be entitled to compensation.
